‘Saccharine: of, relating to, or resembling that of sugar.’ The idea for the pieces in "Saccharine" came from my love of painting in the trompe l'oeil style as well as the joy I get from juxtaposing various types of gummy candies with different subjects and backgrounds. The impetus behind the first piece, “Fatal Attraction", was a discarded lure I had found. So obviously I paired that with the delicious candy, Swedish Fish. From there, it gathered steam and turned more towards famous pieces in art history. Whether it’s a gummy worm emerging from the apple in Rene Magritte’s famous painting “Son of Man” or a sour patch kid in Klimt’s painting “The Kiss”, which I tongue in cheek entitled “Consequences”, I just find joy and humor combining two seemingly unrelated subjects.
