ARTIST STATEMENT

In this new series of works, I focus on distorting and combining well-known images in our society using a hyperrealistic drawing technique. What I am trying to achieve is to not only create a visually appealing piece, but to create a work of art where the viewer is intrigued by its beauty and oddities. I alter the subject matter just enough to impart an awareness that something isn’t quite as it should be which is evident in the distorted hands. The second element in these works consists of flowers and trees interacting with the hands. Visually, these elements are in vivid contrast to each other because of the colors and the emotions each produces. Color impacts the viewer powerfully but having a dark and mystical aspect such as the black drip elevates the work in multiple senses. The hands give off a vaguely ominous feel, but, at the same time, the reflections and inviting hand positions are comforting. These hands represent “us” or society. We are kind and curious but destructive and malignant as well. In the end though, the combination of the living elements create a beautiful composition of balance and serenity, giving this show the name Duality. — Tanner Valant

ARTIST BIO

Tanner Valant, a budding artist attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, distorts and combines well-known societal images using a hyperrealistic technique with color pencils. Primarily self-taught, his work explores themes of balance, duality, and our interactions with the world. Drawing from his experiences and observations, he captures the serene coexistence of contrasting elements, primarily represented by hands intertwined with flowers.

Valant’s artistry found solid ground during the pandemic. What started as stress relief morphed into a passion, with social media providing a platform for recognition and growth. His works, such as the "Drippy Hands" in his "Reimagined" series, have connected with millions on Instagram, and his print releases often sell out rapidly.

Influenced by hyperrealist artist CJ Hendry, Valant continues to push his artistic boundaries, exploring new concepts while maintaining his signature style. He aims to challenge his audience, offering visually appealing, thought-provoking pieces that speak to balance and duality in human nature. His mission as an artist is to create dialogues that inspire change and illuminate the world.
