Artist Statement
"Just over 100 years ago, my Grandpa built a cottage on Wind Lake in Wisconsin. His thought was to have a place for family and friends to gather on weekends for swimming, boating, playing cards and making memories. Wind Lake was a special place to four generations. The cottage remained the site of gatherings and reunions for Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Brothers, Sisters, Kids, Friends and Neighbors until it was sold in 2014 and met the fate of almost all of the other cottages…replaced with a 3 story year round home.
‘Paint what you love’ kept coming to mind when I was scheduled for this solo show at Abend. It didn’t take long for me to focus on this family-centered place. Almost all of the paintings are scenes from Wind Lake through photos shared by family and friends. But the paintings celebrate the family togetherness wherever, whenever and however that happens. I still visit every summer. Our neighbors, the Watschke’s (Watch Keys) are the only cottage people who still own their property. Their original Sear’s built cottage was torn down this winter and replaced with a year round house. But if we sit with our backs to the big homes that have replaced all of the cottages, we can still imagine it the way it was. A simpler time, a very simple and special place. I hope this exhibit reminds you of special places and times with your family.
Many thanks to Abend Gallery for giving me this opportunity." - Sheri Farabaugh

LEARN MORE ABOUT SHERI FARABAUGH
I began painting after careers in tax accounting and biochemistry; just about as far from art as you can get. But a love of drawing and painting as a child and teen stayed with me until time permitted, and from the moment I took my first class as an early retiree, I was forever committed to being the best artist I could be. It is a bit of magic that with nothing but a squeeze of paint and some good brushes, you can tell a story. The hope of pulling that off every now and then is what brings me to my studio almost every day. Finding beauty in the details has led me to a realistic style, and I am drawn to bold values and intricate patterns. I paint many subjects, but a fascination with the reflections and patterns of moving water led me to paint rivers, lakes, ponds, and puddles of the West and Midwest. My husband Dave and I split our time between Colorado and Arizona.
Sheri Farabaugh's paintings have received many awards and recognition, and have been juried into numerous local and national exhibitions. She has studied with Mark Daily, Kevin Wechback, Kim English, Doug Dawson, and Michelle Torrez among others.
