About the Exhibition +
Abend Gallery presents She Is Garden, an exhibition featuring Nadezda's most recent series of paintings. For this newest body of work, Nadezda has brought her figurative style into an environment of lush greenery, capturing both the atmosphere of gardens and the stillness of their beauty through a balance of quiet narrative, warm color and abundant light. As viewers examine each painting closely, the small differences in mood, texture and surrounding foliage can be just as expressive as the figures themselves. Overall, the combination of Nadezda's new works creates a peaceful and introspective viewing experience which is also expansive and open-ended much like entering a private moment suspended in time.
Artist Statement +
Having been surrounded by green embrace of nature in the past two years, I have created this collection with a focus on exploration of a peaceful and serene feeling through depiction of the mysterious female characters co-existing in a company of a garden in its many expressions. It was new to me to paint them in an outdoor lighting. I have achieved a deeper level of understanding some things we assume we know about trees and flowers. For example, jasmine has been a magical blanket for our old home in California and now for this new home in Catalunya. I’ve seen it a thousand times, yet it took me sitting down and spending some hours painting it to notice new details and understand its rhythms - did you know that the jasmine petals swirl towards the middle like little airplane propellers? This and many other little big discoveries made this collection special. -Nadezda

LEARN MORE ABOUT NADEZDA
Nadezda
Nadezda (born in 1985) was educated at Safehouse Atelier in San Francisco in traditional academic methods of painting and drawing; she later became a conceptual artist for movies developing character design for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Kong: Skull Island. Nadezda’s contemporary practice now incorporates oil painting, charcoal drawings, sculpting and photography.
The figurative elements of Nadezda's paintings are developed during theatrical sessions with professional dancers and actors in physical theatre; the imaginative and abstract compositions are created through an unsketched or improvised process which Nadezda refers to as "a conversation with the canvas." Nadezda has been selected to be represented by numerous galleries across the U.S.A. and world, including Abend Gallery.
