Abend Gallery is excited to unveil "Postcards of Colorado: JC Spock Solo Exhibition" from August 19th to September 16th at our Cherry Creek location. Dive deep into Colorado's enchanting history through the lens of JC Spock, who has masterfully transformed vintage postcards into the very canvas of her artistry. In this collection, the timeworn postcards, some a century old, aren’t mere backdrops; they stand at the forefront. Spock layers these with her evocative photography of Colorado’s landscapes and enriches them with diverse media, from vintage ephemera to acrylics. Experience an exhibition where the age-old charm of postcards converges with contemporary artistic expression, capturing the spirit of Colorado across ages.
🗓️ Exhibition run: August 19th - September 16th
📍 Location: 303 Detroit St, Denver, CO 80206 (Cherry Creek)
Artist Statement
What is it about vintage postcards that we find so intriguing? Is it the history of the location, the era from which it hails, or the gorgeous penmanship that is an art unto itself? Or is it perhaps the nostalgic feelings that transport us to a bygone era and simpler times? For me, it’s all the above.
For the past decade, I have searched, sourced and collected thousands of postcards which I incorporate into the background of my larger work to provide historical context for the photographs I take. But for my latest series, the postcards have become the substrate for my work, not just a detail in them. Postcards from Colorado features antique postcards from around the state – many 100 years or older – that are juxtaposed with the artist’s photography from Colorado and layered with additional vintage ephemera, acrylics and pencils. A snapshot into the past? A perspective on the present? Why, they are both. - JC Spock
