My art is about searching for the right moment. Rather than building a narrative, I explore my surroundings and look for things that make me feel something deeply. It’s like hearing a melody in the noise. This means instead of setting up a very specific scene, I will take thousands of photographs and sift through them to look for the exact right expression. I will splash paint on the canvas and search for the unexpected marks as a starting point to build my figure. I mix the intuitive nature of expressionist painting with the craft of executing realism. It’s about letting your feelings drive you from 0-60 and then telling the brain to take over once you've reached top speed heading to your destination. With a combination of intuition and craft, occasional melodies will come to the surface. -Matt Talbert
