"Familiar Beasts” is devoted to the little animals with whom we share this earth. In the hustle bustle of the life we’ve created for humans, these common creatures are often overlooked unless they are being vilified just for living (i.e. they eat our vegetables, dig holes in our yards, chew on vital wires in our vehicles). Perhaps being overlooked is why I love to honor them. Maybe it's because as a kid, I felt a lot like I was overlooked, because I was little—still am—and I felt I had a lot to say, so this is just my way of talking for us all. I do like to think about and tap into their inherent wisdom—the wisdom of being connected to the earth as humans once were.
I don't know about you, but I give a nod and a hey to all those little ones when I'm on a walk, or if they are crossing the street while I'm in my car. I think they appreciate it, and it makes me feel happier. It reminds me of the impermanence of life, and to be thankful for the life we are given, warts and all. I hope my paintings bring you as much peace and joy as I get through creating them. - Gina Matarazzo
