Artist Statement

While I typically center my artistic practice around the figure, I embrace water as both subject and medium. As I delved into this series, I began to question my choice of swimming as a narrative. Pools and the environments where bodies are interacting with water are very unfamiliar with me and sparked a genuine interest.

Through my art, I sought to insert myself into these aquatic environments, infusing them with the presence of black figures. As a creative, I found the joy in devising various methods to portray both water and the presence of a people, even if their bodies are not visually present in the painting. While acknowledging the weight of historical stereotypes and racism surrounding black bodies and water, I intentionally aimed for a sense of lightness in these paintings, inviting viewers to a mundane moment in time.

Employing unconventional tools such as large squidgy implements and dampened paper towels, I sculpted layers of paint to evoke the serene calmness of placid waters or the turbulent energy of rushing currents. My series, 'Currents of Color,' is an exploration of water in its myriad forms: from thick to thin, stillness to motion, indoors to outdoors, and the interplay of figures within, around, or submerged beneath its surface. - Andrew Gray

Learn More about Andrew Gray

Andrew Gray, an acclaimed painter and designer based in Baltimore, Maryland, artfully combines his expertise in fine arts and professional design into a distinctive visual language that resonates deeply with viewers. With a BFA in Fine Arts and extensive experience in design, Gray has cultivated a unique artistic approach that challenges traditional narratives surrounding black communities. His paintings, known for evolving from digital collages, emphasize the diversity and complexity of black identities, moving beyond stereotypical representations. Gray's work is inspired by his fascination with creation's magic, reminiscent of his childhood curiosity sparked by old master paintings and magic tricks. Currently focusing on themes that merge figures with nature, his art reflects a longing for outdoor experiences, a direct inspiration from his pandemic-induced introspection. As an Innovate Grant Winner, Gray emphasizes the importance of experimentation and resilience in the artistic journey. Influenced by notable artists like Kerry James Marshall, Amy Sherald, and Toyin Odutola, Gray's contributions are both a personal narrative and a broader cultural dialogue, marking him as a significant voice in contemporary art.

Artist Statement

I am a 21st-century painter and visual storyteller committed to challenging prevailing societal narratives surrounding black individuals within our community. I aim to celebrate the diverse humanity of African American figures often overlooked in mainstream depictions. My subjects range from art collectors and museum security guards to police officers and everyday individuals, prompting contemplation on their experiences and navigation through the complexities of American society.

Rather than perpetuating stereotypes, my mission is to showcase the rich tapestry of black identity, emphasizing its complexity and depth. My paintings strive to elevate characters frequently marginalized by society, positioning their narratives at the forefront of the canvas. This intentional spotlight challenges the notion that they are exceptions to modernity, asserting their place as exemplars of contemporary life.

My academic background in fine art and graphic design significantly influences my artistic process. I begin by crafting digital collages, refining my ideas before translating them into tangible paintings. The fusion of techniques from both disciplines has shaped a cohesive visual language that defines my work. While my primary focus is on the contemporary Black figure, my exploration extends to the color schemes of 1960s abstract expressionism and various artistic influences.

In essence, my aesthetic practice is a responsive dialogue with the cultural, sociopolitical, historical, and economic dimensions of the present moment. By producing, discussing, exchanging, and displaying my work, I contribute to a broader conversation about representation, identity, and the power of art to challenge and reshape collective narratives.
